As WhatsApp crosses 400 million subscribers, a revolution is in the making

The Indian subscribers on WhatsApp have reached 400 million.  This is WhatsApps largest market by far.  Amitabh Kant, CEO of NITI Aayog announced this in a press conference held by WhatsApp in New Delhi on July 25th.  Subsequently, WhatsApp spokesperson confirmed this as well.

Just two years back, WhatsApp had hit 200 million subscribers.

Now, all this comes with a price.  We came to know last year how the Indian subscribers were clogging the the WhatsApp servers by sending millions of “Good Morning” messages with nice pictures to friends and family!

And it is not just the WhatsApp servers, but also people’s phones that run out of space very soon.

One in three smartphone users in India run out of space daily, according to a survey by data-storage firm Western Digital Corp., compared with one in 10 in the US. (source)

According to a research firm, Counterpoint, India has 450 million users.  Remember, that the total US population is 350 million!

Now, in fact many businesses are being built on WhatsApp and they are growing really fast.  For example, Meesho is a social ecommerce platform completely built using WHatsApp as its base.

The smartphone growth is poised to bring about an amazing revolution in India in the future.
