All that horse trading was ultimately for useless gains in the Nuclear deal. It was just a smokescreen from the US afterall. So it now seems. The chief negotiator of the India-United States nuclear deal Nicholas Burns has categorically said:
“No aspect of this deal recognises India as a nuclear weapons state.”
Oh really? Then who the f*** needs that recognition in the first place?
On the eve of the vote by the International Atomic Energy Agency’s Board of Governors on the India-specific safeguards agreement, the chief negotiator of the India-United States nuclear deal Nicholas Burns has said the 123 Agreement ‘absolutely is consistent with every part of the Hyde Act’.
After a hiatus of four months and speaking for the first time since leaving the Bush administration, Burns, currently on a short stint with the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, emphasised, “The 123 Agreement does not supersede the Hyde Act. It’s a complement and necessary part.”
Now, this is something that our dear PM needs to explain at length. I have said earlier, that this deal was never about the Nuclear energy independence and all that jazz.. that was nonsense to begin with. It was first and foremost about being a legitimate Nuclear power. And if THAT is in question, then I think US and India are talking about two different things. And it is imperative for the PM to explain it to the country!
I think India is doing fine without being in those nations and let it be the headache of the US on how to force attacks on Pakistan without neutralizing their nukes and thus risk their own forces. There is no reason why India should give up its independence on this issue at all. Again, this is a deal about making India an independent nuclear state not bind it under some law. Anything short will be disastrous!
