Google comes out with a “like” button

As the social media war heats up, Google has come out with its own version of “Like” button, which beckons recommendations from the public for the various web pages, sites, products etc.  What is it?  Per Google:

The +1 button is shorthand for “this is pretty cool” or “you should check this out.”  Click +1 to publicly give something your stamp of approval. Your +1’s can help friends, contacts, and others on the web find the best stuff when they search.

The button is in kind of a “beta” format as one has to apply for “the experiment”.  Here are the instructions on how to use it:

To get started +1’ing the stuff you like, you’ll need to create a Google profile-or if you already have one, upgrade it. You can use your profile to see all of your +1’s in one place, and delete those you no longer want to recommend. To see +1’s in your Google search results you’ll need to be logged into your Google Account.

Step by Step:

If you already have a Google profile and want to enable or disable +1 on non-Google sites:

  • Sign in to your Google Account .
  • Click the +1 button for the item you’d like to save, share, or recommend.
  • To enable +1 on non-Google sites, confirm that I’m fine with Google using my +1’s and other info around content and ads on non-Google websites is selected. To disable +1 on non-Google sites, deselect this option.
  • Click Share my +1’s.

If you don’t have a Google profile and want to enable or disable +1 on non-Google sites:

  • Sign in to your Google Account .
  • Click the +1 button for the item you’d like to save, share, or recommend.
  • Enter your public profile name and add a photo for your profile.
  • To enable +1 on non-Google sites, confirm that I’m fine with Google using my +1’s and other info around content and ads on other websites is selected. To disable +1 on non-Google sites, deselect this option.
  • Click Share my +1’s and create profile.

Will this be a game changer?  I am not sure.  I think Facebook has something powerful to give to its users when it combines the entire platform to connect with the ability to recommend!  What do you think?
