India Leading From The Front In Peacekeeping, Says UN’s South Sudan Mission Chief

The UN Secretary General’s Special Representative for South Sudan, David Shearer in an exclusive interview with SNI Associate Editor, Amitabh P Revi and Video Journalist Prateek Suri in Juba. The Head of the UNMISS (United Nations Mission in South Sudan) speaks about how much India has contributed and sacrificed in peacekeeping and civilian outreach, why India is an example to over 60 tribes in the peace process, what is needed to keep the fragile deal going and how to handle human rights abuses and accountability while working to end conflict.

Mr. Shearer also talks about the UN mandate renewal in March, 2019, the challenges faced because of accusations from warring parties, restriction on freedom of movement and resource and personnel mobilization.

David Shearer has been at the helm of UNMISS since January 2017. He was a Member of Parliament in New Zealand before that. He has served as the UN Secretary General’s Deputy Special Representative in UNAMI (United Nations Mission for Iraq). He has also held senior UN positions dealing with the Afghanistan and Lebanon.
