Are India and China on a Collision Course due to Oil & Gas?

India has bought a stake in Vietnam’s oilfield, which is in South China Sea.  China is not happy and is trying to block things for India, who have warned that they can use force to take care of their interests.

Are India and China on a collision course?  And in that case, is it going to become an open invitation to US to come in and play arbiter?  Things could become queerer than these two would have bargained for very soon, unless China gets over its obsession with hegemony.
